Well, I was wrong.
Thought this story had died when I posted yesterday but the SI has a follow up article here. Judgeing for the comments section, it should have a few days worth of legs. Wonder if it will draw as much controversy as the Poshard plagiarisms story did?

Closure for Eikenberg
This story has sure dropped out of the local news fast. Apparently the SIUC athletic department has reviewed women's basketball coach Dana Eikenberg's behavior and found nothing worth acting on. It will be interesting to see what athletic director Moccia's plans are to deal with the issues raised by the review.
I did like this blaming the media comment Eikenberg added toward the end of the article:
"Because of your articles, we're going to have to talk about this for the next two years," Eikenberg said. "The more we continue to communicate and talk about it, the more we'll have to defend ourselves.

How Can We Miss You...
.. if you won't go away? Ex-coach Jerry Kill is suing SIUC for holding him to the terms of his contract. According to the article, Kill still had 3 years on his contract as head football coach at SIUC, when he took the coaching spot at Northern Illinois. His SIUC contract requires him to pay the university a third of a year's salary if he takes another position before the contract expires. The university calls it liquidated damages to cover costs associated with replacing him, he says it's an illegal penalty because the contract had no provision for him accepting another coaching position.

Coach Kill Named Liberty Coach of the Year
From an email from the SIU Alumni Association:
Dear Saluki Fan,
During November and December you were asked to vote for former Southern Illinois University Head Coach Jerry Kill in the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Poll. Thanks to the support of Salukis throughout the nation, Kill was recently named the 2007 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year in a special presentation on ABC.
As a result of winning the award, $50,000 will be donated to the Coach Kill Cancer Fund. An additional $20,000 will be given to the SIU Alumni Association to implement scholarships.
Kill topped The Citadel's Kevin Higgins, Northern Iowa's Mark Farley, South Dakota State's John Stiegelmeier and Morehead State University's Matt Ballard in the overall voting at the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) level.
The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year is awarded to the college football coach who best demonstrates responsibility, integrity, and excellence on and off the field.
The winner in each division was chosen using a combination of fan votes and votes received from members of the 2007 Coach of the Year Selection Committee.
Kill, who left on Dec. 13 after seven years at SIU to become head coach at Northern Illinois, is the first in Saluki football history to win the prestigious award. Under Kill, the Salukis qualified for the playoffs five-consecutive seasons from 2003-07. SIU was 12-2 and advanced to the final four this past season

New Coach At SIUC
Well that was fast. It took only 15 days to hire Lennon after Coach Kill made his announcement. Makes me wonder if SIUC was expecting this and already had an offer ready for Lennon. It appears the announcement was made in ND last Tuesday (registration required). Looks like he'll get $200,000 a year to take over coaching duties. Meanwhile, Coach Kill is getting $340,000 to take over coaching duties at Northern Illinois. I found this bit from the Fox Valley Villages Sun interesting:
Kill was signed to a five-year, incentive-laden contract with an option for an extension after 24 months. Phillips wouldn't reveal details, but a published report in the Marion (Ill.) Daily Republican, citing a source close to Kill, said he would earn about $340,000 per season. That's up from the $175,000 he earned at Southern.
Kill said demanding more money from SIU would have hurt that school's athletic program.
If I've got this straight, Kill didn't want more than $175,000 because that would hurt the SIU athletic program but offering Lennon $25,000 more won't? Athletic payrollls are strange.Labels: siu sports

This Isn't Gonna Help SIU Football Any
I read through this article about the search for a new football coach and was really struck by the nonchalant way AD Moccia added on this last bit:
"I think almost all of them have gone with Jerry," Moccia said. "As far as I know, virtually all of the assistant coaches will be going up with Jerry."
The way I understand this, it means the entire program starts over from scratch. Geez. Unless they sign someone really good with some name recognition, why would any player sign a letter of intent to come here?

Bet Against SIU
I was talking with a friend yesterday who follows sports betting pretty closely. He said that 95% of the bets he saw were for SIUC to lose both of last Saturday's games and for the basketball team to continue the trend, at least for the immediate future.

Playoff Attendance Doubles
Looks like, despite the weather, over 11,000 people "Packed the Mac" on Saturday for the final game of SIUC's football season. Kudos to the people that sat out in the cold drizzle to cheer on the Salukis. Mario Moccia's and the athletic department's full court press to get people out over the week worked.

Delaware 20 SIUC 17
From ESPN.com. Looks like the Salukis got off to an early lead, then remained scoreless until the 4th quarter, while Delaware didn't score anything the first quarter but but successfully ran the ball each of the next three quarters.

Pumping Up Attendance
Looks like SIU sports boosters are actively working to push up attendance numbers for this Saturday's football game. The Chancellor's office is buying a number of tickets to distribute free as are several others in the area. I was just talking to an acquaintance on their way over to the sports office to buy tickets for their entire staff.

Athletic Department Not Happy
According to the Southern, looks like SIU's athletic department is not happy with the way Southern Illinois is responding to the football playoffs. Meanwhile, over on the editorial page, there's a full blow pep talk about how the team deserves support.
Darn the NCAA for making people pay full price for tickets! At least, that's one of the reasons given for the poor turnout.
