Southern Business Journal
I didn't know the Southern was still publishing this. I used to have a subscription to it and, given how hard it can be to get free subscriptions to end, I'm surprised I stopped receiving it (I'm still trying to get Brandweek to stop sending me two copies of each issue.)

Lee Enterprises Sinking
A reader pointed out that the value of Lee Enterprises, owner of both the St. Louis Post Dispatch and, more importantly for our purposes, the Southern Illinoisan, dropped 97% last year, going from $45 a share about 3 years ago to a whole 44 cents a share as of earlier today, and is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. No announcements of layoffs at the Southern yet, but the PD is cutting another 39 jobs and may not be a "going concern", to quote its accountant, by the end of the year.

More People Staying In?
It take a pretty expansive use of the term "more" for the Southern to move from a story mentioning 2 people staying in on New Year's Eve to a general statement that more people are staying in for the holiday. I guess two people is more but still, I was looking for some statistics or research that said there was a trend throughout the country or even the region.

It's McCain!
Yep, finally, after keeping ups in suspense for weeks, the Southern has thrown its weight behind McCain. Uh, Mr. Editor, announcing your support for McCain TWO DAYS before the election. Rather like showing up to the party when all the guests are leaving. You're there, but it's too late for anyone to care. Heck, the Tribune announced their endorsement 2 weeks ago, giving people some time to think about what the editorial said.

Old Main
The Southern has a short documentary on the burning of the Old Main Building this month back in 1969 with interviews with a couple of the firefighters that were there. Watch it here.

New Managing Editor at the Southern
As the story says, Mark Fitton is the new managing editor at the Southern. I found this statement in the story interesting:
Fitton will serve as a member of the newspaper's Editorial Board, lead final newsroom production of the daily paper, ensure the Web site is supplied with fresh news throughout the night and assist in long-range operational, organizational and financial planning for the newsroom.
This infers more emphasis on updating the website 24/7. In today's world that's gotta be a good thing. Now if they'd just get rid of Ann Coulter....

Sales Tax Redeaux
I thought we had moved beyond the sales tax controversy and were busy raking President Poshard over the coals but this letter (scroll down towards the bottom to the Alfred Sanders letter) indicates otherwise. Or has Jane Adams written another letter I haven't seen? A search of the SI archives doesn't show anything written by her since last month.

Kerthump!
That is the sound of the other shoe dropping. According to WSIU this morning, as well as this article in the Southern Illinoisan, the Chronicle of Higher Education is preparing an article on questionable passages in Pres. Poshard's 1975 master's thesis as well as his 1984 dissertation.

Lack of Support for Poshard?
Looks to me as if President Poshard has gotten quite a bit of support from the SIUC/Carbondale community, but according to this editorial in today's Southern Illinoisan, anyone who comes out in support of him should fear the AFAC:
AFAC should now do the right thing and allow Poshard to know who his accusers are. It also might calm the generally roiling academic waters at SIU. Who would dare to take a position in support of Poshard and risk a counter-attack by a shadowy group of accusers?
Me, anytime I read about AFAC, I think of a duck.

Interesting takes on the Poshard Situation
It's still front page news in the DE today, plus an editorial, plus several letters on the letters page. In the Southern Illinoisan, nothing.

Well, That's Intersting.
Every Friday, the Southern Illinoisan runs a Ups and Downs column on the opinion page. After the positive take on the editorial page Thursday regarding the sales tax vote, I'd expect a thumbs up for the tax passage. No mention of it though.
