Dome Fundraiser

Looks like the folks trying to restore Bucky's Dome have a fundraiser lined up for Aug. 17 starting at noon at the Orlandi Vineyard. Music provided by the Ivas John Band. The event kicks (pops? domes?) off at noon and ends around 6 p.m.

Missed Bucky's Birthday Yesterday?

Me too! But you can still help celebrate the birthday of one of the greatest thinkers ever to live in Carbondale by helping to cover the $15,0000 it's going to cost to cover general expenses at the dome this year. Ya know, it wouldn't have been a bad idea for the Dome Crew to have set up a display at the Wine and Art Festival with a dome cake and raised some money that way. People with wine in them tend to get more generous. I saw representatives for WDBX and Obama '08 with tables there earlier in the day (Heads up if you go to the Obama'08 site. He starts talking as soon as you get there).

More Varsity Work

In case you're looking for something to do this week and are handy with tools, the Varsity Theater has more work:
Hello Everyone,

1.) You’ll notice a lot going has been going on, next time you’re working at the Varsity Center for the Arts—the intermission room has got some walls up and in the East Theater the movie screen is down. Here’s the upcoming work schedule:

2.) Stage Company members & friends, please join us in extending condolences to Jo Ann Hensley and family, at the passing of her mother.

3.) The McLeod Summer Playhouse opens this weekend. Go see a show. Go see TWO shows—art makes a full life.

Cathy Field

Or you could go lend a hand at Bucky's Dome. Looks like the new temporary plastic cover is on the ground after only a month.

Dome Life

Bucky's Dome has another temporary plastic cover put on it after the spring storms tore holes in the previous temporary cover that had lasted for 7 years. I'm not privy to what the Dome BOD is doing as far as permanently fixing it and think it would be downright stupid to pull it down as I've heard a couple of people suggest. It would be nice if the Dome blog was updated more or the organization sent out press releases to let the community know what was happening.

Dome Update

From the Bucky's Dome Board of Directors

Update on Fuller Dome repairs

The Board of Directors of RBF Dome, the group working to restore the Buckminster Fuller Dome home at 407 S. Forest, wants residents of the Arbor District to know that repairs of the temporary dome plastic roof and perimeter fence will be taking place in the coming weeks.

The Board has been aware for some time of the need to replace the plastic “skin” on the temporary dome. The outer dome is protecting the Fuller Dome home until sufficient funds are raised to do the restoration work on the former Fuller residence. The strong wind storm on Sunday has necessitated the immediate need for the repair as almost half of the plastic was torn off. Within the next two weeks, assuming the materials can be secured, a new plastic roof will be installed on the protective dome. If any neighboring properties had portions of the old plastic covering blown onto their properties please accept our apology and contact Tom Redmond at 457-0424 if you would like him to clean up any debris.

Work on the Fuller-designed perimeter fence will resume this spring and summer. The City of Carbondale has approved $1500 in its current budget to pay for the stump removal that will allow for the fence restoration to resume. The stump removal will be occurring in the near future. The RBF Board and volunteers will continue to restore additional sections of the fence along Forest and Cherry Streets. In addition, more substantial temporary fencing will be installed as old sections of the original fence are removed for repair and restoration.

Bucky's Dome

After sitting dormant for over a year, (since summer of '06), the Bucky's Dome Blog is active again. Hopefully, this means renewed activity on fundrasing and getting the dome designated a National Historic landmark (not that they haven't been, it's just been awfully quiet.

Blatant Fundraising Plug

We've received a few geodesic dome toys at the store from the folks at Bucky's Dome that we're selling for them to help raise money for the Dome rehab. All the money from them goes to the Dome (except for the sales tax). So if you're looking for a $10 gift, consider a dome.

BTW, the Dymaxion Sundaes sold a couple of weeks ago at the Dome as fund raisers were Fuller's favorite dessert and consisted of orange sherbet topped with chocolate syrup. He ordered it often enough at Colletti's Restaurant, located where Key West is now, or so I've been told, that the management added it to the menu. If anyone reading this still has a Colletti's menu with the Dymaxion Sundae on it, the Bucky's Dome folks would sure like a copy for their collection.
