Earthquake link roundup / primer for non-Californians

I was awakened last night by the earthquake-- a 5.4, according to everything I've read so far. My former Californian resident wife is suddenly full of interesting earthquake info. In a nutshell-- head outdoors, as I don't want my 90-year-old home crashing down on my head. Apparently, my large yard is an earthquake safety luxury those crazy Californians would love to have... Anyways, here's a roundup of bloggers discussing what may be the biggest earthquake in recent Illinois history:

Dave Ferguson wonders "did you feel it?"

Ron Hogan plans to sue for loss of soda

Susan is reminded of grandpa's vibrating bed. Why grandpa had a vibrating bed? We'll never know.

Poor Jennifer has to get up way too early.

Ultimate Blogging Machine sacrifices accuracy for speed.

WSIL-TV's website had nothing as of the time of this entry, haha. Not quite a scoop, but still!

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency advocates a "duck, cover, hold" approach to earthquake safety. They also have good information about earthquake preparedness, and a family earthquake plan.

Comments:
Hello, Every one, Yeah I was sturdying when I felt it, ome where around 4 am... And it hit again just moments ago between 10:15 and 10:20 am... it's short, less than 10 seconds... funny thing my roommate who is sleeping on the floor woke up giving me the look with a "Tssk!!!" like if was causing the shake!!! I'm like you're on the floor idiot LOL

Carbondale,

If you know anything about blogging and news, you know first reports (a.k.a., "breaking news") are often brief and sketchy. Updates fill in the gaps.

So, next time you get the bug up your butt and accuse someone of sacrificing accuracy for speed, don't do it -- without pointing out specifics, that is.

I have a journalism degree and 20+ years of working with/in the media business. Plus, my blog ranks exponentially higher than yours.

Perhaps I'll listen to you once you gain an iota of credibility.

Earthquake reporting is just a hobby for me, Bob. My real job is driving pretentious rank-obsessed bloggers who lack a sense of humor up the wall.

In other news, scientists announced today that the iota will be phased out as a standard unit of credibility, and will be replaced by the smidgen.

Dear Davex-

DO THE WORLD A FAVOR AND CANCEL YOUR BLOGGER ID, JERK! YOU HAVEN'T BLOGGED MORE THAN 6 MONTHS AND I'M ALREADY SICK OF YOU.

DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU WHEN YOU LEAVE.

Anon-- Actually, I've been blogging since November 2006. My Blogger ID is something I have because it facilitated easier commenting at Blogger locations, especially before the OpenID function. If you'll notice at the ONE ENTRY I have under this ID, my primary blog is at http://startlingmoniker.wordpress.com

Feel free to continue your cowardly and anonymous crazyperson rantings at that location!
