Rental Inspection Fee Letter
Friday's DE has a letter from the ubiquitous Jane Adams regarding the proposed $35 rental inspection fee which makes some good points, though I would like to see some figures regarding the number of units in Carbondale that are dangerous or unhealthy. I do recall from the last council meeting that approximately 20% of existing units are inspected each year, rather than the 33% mandated by statute.

S. Thorne asked to see some figures regarding the number of units in Carbondale that are dangerous or unhealthy. At this point there is absolutely no way to know, since the City has never carried out its required 3-year cycle of inspecting rental properties. The $35 inspection fee will allow the city to hire enough inspectors to do the inspections AND input the data into a data base. After the first cycle we should know how many landlords are irresponsible, and how many units regularly fail to pass inspection.
At this point, the data simply isn't collected, so it isn't there.
