How Long Downtown?

Eventually I'l get back onto looking at the sales tax proposal. In the meantime, here's a project I'm working on I could use some help with. Following is a list of Carbondale businesses (almost all downtown) and how long they've been in business. Some of them I don't have dates for and there may be errors in the others. Don't know if the tobacco store is the 'original'but back in the '60's there was a tobacco store next to the original Leo's Tavern. Leo's was the first building south of the train depot, and closest to the tracks.
Tobacco store was next, if I recall, then a cafe, and the old hotel was on the corner at Illinois Ave. The whole thing burned back sometime late 60's or so. Too bad....Leo's was a real treasure. Immense back bar, tile floors and brass spitoons. No chairs at the bar, just a brass foot rail. Had a side door that opened directly onto the railroad loading/unloading area.imisu

Other long time downtown businesses include Jerry's Flowers, Quatro's, Shawnee Trails, Varsity South Barber Shop, El Greco, Horstman Cleaners, Main Street Laundry, Bank of Carbondale, Italian Village.

BookWorld has been downtown for a long time too. Its grand re-opening with new owners is on September 1.
